Scene of showing the improved dog collar invention... Joy the movie is my favorite film! It came out in 2015. I saw it in 2016 I think after I switched to the business major. I was always an entrepreneur personality though! Be innovative and learn about entrepreneurship from real entrepreneurs and innovators. Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress!... Edit: This video reminds me also of the relationship I had with my mother (also when I posted this, too) in some ways... I think Joy Mangano is inspiring, but I wish they also showed entrepreneurs building huge projects or empires. She has over 110 patents so she must have a huge company by now. Where is Part 2?

Ideas are not patentable. Patents, if granted (not only filed), only apply to the jurisdiction they're granted in and not in other countries. Patents rarely help the small inventor, as he doesn't have the capacity to sue infringements by large corporations with their well-paid lawyers, while large corporations have large patent portfolios any product of a small inventor is likely to infringe somewhere (as patent applications are written in the most broadest sense possible, and in the US include now things like business procedures, software, mathematics, biology, and other stuff that really shouldn't be patentable as it isn't the disclosure of a technical method of a device), so such portfolios can be used for retaliation.

  Alright... that's totally fine. Just, at CSU Chico last year a student presented an idea, and a local Chico business saw it. They then took the product and did it themselves. But yes, ideas are ideas. :)

  I don't completely understand what you say here. Is that an actual example of happening what I said about ideas, that they're not "protectable", by any law anywhere? I think almost all humans have a lot of ideas all the time, there's no lack of these or problem with producing them, but one rarely finds himself/herself with a ready, idle and capable execution engine that makes the ideas real. Only if you have one of these and after some time ran out of ideas, more new ideas become something valuable, if it turns out that you can't think of new things yourself. Only concrete expressions are "protectable" (at least in theory, on paper, according to defunct laws), or particular schemes of realization. Otherwise one could simply claim the rights on a general idea (what office would register it, what office would enforce it?), and prevent everybody else who came up with the same idea independently (at the same time, later or earlier) or has heard it in the common exchange of ideas. So ideas are cheap and free, the only way to protect them is to never tell them to anybody. But if one doesn't have the means to realize them, why not tell everybody, so maybe someone can realize them for you? Also, not everybody is able to execute/scale an idea well, and sometimes the idea is worse than one thinks it is.

  I don't remember the numbers, but for a patent, they weren't too expensive - likely with the catch that it costs a lot to do it "right", in case there's a dispute afterwards, a cheap/sloppy one won't do. And then legal fees to enforce it. So if there's not a lot of anticipated risk that the patent doesn't cover the right aspects, that other patents or prior art already exists, that an evil competitor with deep pockets wants to go after it, it shouldn't be too expensive, to have it for other reasons like marketing to potential investors or something. But what do I know ;-) I guess I should really watch that film now.

  They are expensive. I just dissolved Worldie's business entity after the CampFire because of the cost. I wanted to avoid the $800 per year LLC fee in California. Other states are around $100 but not here :/. It makes no revenue yet, so it's pointless. Also, if anyone wants to turn Worldie into a nonprofit, I would love to do that. I just love having it here.

  Oh, I totally get that, if costs are recurring. I thought they're not for patents, but can be wrong, and there could be costs again for the extension of the term. Same for the business registration, really sucks, I guess the idea is that the authorities assume that you already can generate some nice income before registering (new) patents or register certain forms of a company. Don't know about regulations in the US though, in Germany it's easy and cheap, but I was too lazy to do tax paperwork as long as I didn't conduct any business operations ;-)

  Hmmm often people register here withoit income to try to pritect against liability or to protect their ideas. Then there are companies who charge a lot extra to do it for you.

  Hmm, if it's more expensive because it's some sort of a scammy offer, sort of just registering them so the holder can be proud or thinks he/she got his smart idea protected, then that's a different story in my mind than if you know what you're doing, and get a decent patent filed/granted, for the more or less "normal" costs, without some special patent-engineering to counter a big company that's also active in that space.

  Exactly ;-) And as soon as one does, it's at risk of being copied, as how can people be blamed to run with an idea they've seen or heard of, for it cannot be unseen again. Sure, I get your point, the inventor cares a lot about his/her invention, but me, for example, I'm not very serious/committed/invested business-wise, so a strategy could be to tell the ideas absolutely everybody, in the hope that some try to realize it, so they bear all the risk and if they're successful, I'll be able to enjoy the result (make vs. buy) ;-)
